The Dow's Drop: Key Facts About the Index

After the turbulence of September, the relentless selloff in October and the uncertainty heading into the presidential election, investors were hoping to sneak out of November without quite so much drama. No such luck. The Dow posted its lowest close in more than five years Wednesday. Here are other key facts about the Dow:

  • Lowest close since March 31, 2003.
  • Down 14.2% this month.
  • In October it closed down 14.1%.
  • Year-to-date it's off 39.7%
  • Off 6167 points, or 43.5%, from its record close of 14165 hit on October 9, 2007.
  • Biggest point drop since November 6.
  • Biggest percentage drop this month.
  • Down eight of the last 11 trading days.
  • Off 16.9% over that 11-day period.
  • Tenth biggest point drop this year.
  • Sixth biggest percentage drop this year.
