Can these accounts be used for nieces/nephews, or only ones own children? I don't have children of my own, but want to contribute to my sibling's children's education. If I can't use 529's, what are other options? Thanks!

I have 3 biological children 11,9,and 2 months and 3 step children ages 13, 9 and 6. Savings plans were started at birth for my 11 & 9 year old. I would like to get each a plan started. What do you suggest for minimum contributions per year, per child? Do we their ages into consideration? If one or more decide not to attend college, can the plan be transfered into another child's fund or can it be utilized for a trust fund?

TIAA-Cref is also the worst rated fund family by Morningstar based on it's stewardship grade. In English, NONE of their fund managers own their own funds.

tiaa-cref plans are the most cost effective and family friendly. It is clear a lot of people pay more for their 529 because of broker fees and other overhead which are minimized by tiaa-cref.
