The first thing I did when I started a new business was to get disability insurance. You have to carefully read the contracts before you sign on the dotted line. Typically, the insurance agent will babble about the benefits of the the insurance and then thrust a contract in front of you. Don't fall for it. Get a copy of the contract and read it over carefully. If the agent will not leave the contract, ask the agent to leave. With disability insurance, there is way too much at risk to gamble on the words of someone making money off of your signature. You need an iron clad agreement. You have to know when you will get paid and when you will not. The last thing you want to do when you are so ill that you cannot work is to argue with a call center. Be careful. Be smart when buying disability insurance. Ron D

I was clueless about disability insurance. I ended up talking to an agent at http://www.disability-insurance-update.com that sent me several quotes to compare and choose from. We spent about an hour on the phone after I called her with questions. In the end, I understood what I was buying and it was really affordable.

Poor Robert in the story has wasted his money as his disability will claim any problem he has will be a pre-existing condition as he has Type 1 Diabetes. I developed a back issue after 30 years as an RN and Prudential is claiming that a visit to the MD for my blood pressure is a pre-existing condition. I have been fighting this for over a year and I do not see them helping me at all.

The first thing I did when i started my own company was get life insurance. It wasn't until months later that I realized I needed income insurance as well. I found a site at http://www.disabilityinsuranceadvisor.com/ and called an agent that ran me through the options and provided several quotes from different companies. The process was actually pretty painless and now I covered up to 70% of my regular income if ever I can't work because of illness or injury.
