If it does not achieve our objective, and it hurts those we are trying to 'help', why are we doing it? The reverse policy would benefit us and the Cubans both.It is time for some common sense in government.

I can't wait to go to Cuba!! Cigars, beaches, cruises from Key West...Perhaps even cheap land for investments!! It'll be like Costa Rica all over again, one hopes

Cuba with a population of about 11,000,000 (the population of PA) has always been touted by the free trade nuts as a Garden of Eden which will bring major economic prosperity to american businesses. This is totaly false as Cuba is a very poor country whose economy is based on that very valuable commodity named sugar cane. What economic bonanza has Haiti brought to the US? Is America so desperate for business that it is depending on a third world country like Cuba to keep us afloat?

A large majority of Cubans like living under Castro and like Iraq, they are not going to greet the US liberators with flowers and wine.(are you listening Wshington?) For sure, Cuba will revert to its former status and become another playground for the vacationing rich, not that another one is needed in the Carribean.

What Cuba has proven is that diplomacy and trade embargos do not work.(are you listening Washington?)

I've been to Gitmo in Cuba and like the weather there. I also like the fact that the country has withstood pressure against it for property of the extremely predatory. Hopefully Cuba will return to better relations with the US and people can enjoy that Island again shortly.

Oh, come on, Hough, get off that high horse. You make it sound as if the US is the root of all evil. You deverve to have lived the last 49 years in Cuba or North Korea

Cuban issues need to be solved by Cuban politics. The country will go into a dicatorship even if we open up trade. Good article though. The history of Cuba is so interwoven with our own. It is amazing that a small island can have such an impact on the US.

I predict that once the trade current got started there would be no stopping the tide of transformation of Cuba to democracy. I guess I can understand the politicians stance as they do some not so smart things sometimes to get votes or maintain a base. I just don't see how intelligent people can maintain a policy against trade with Cuba like the US has done for so long when it is obvious that it is a total failure. The article also sets forth several other valid reasons for freeing up trade.
