I found the 'buy the book' scam particularly offensive: My daughter writes poetry and submitted poems for several scholarships. In each case, she was selected as a finalist, but her poem would receive no further consideration if she didn't purchase the book in which it was going to be published, generally selling in the $50-75 range.
