I just saw an ad on TV for metal detectors. For every action, there's a reaction.

So if it WERE all to come crashing down, what makes people think that having U.S. currency only a few shovel-fulls away, would make them any more secure?
I suppose I could see burying gold or other precious metals, but paper currency?
Smart moves. Don't let logic or rational thought get in the way of that overblown, emotional decision.

This was a practice when I grew up in an eastern U.S. farm town. People were still frightened by FDR's meddling in the banking system. The farmers especially could do this because they had so much space to bury their cash. The practice was inherited from their parents and grandparents in the 1800's when banks were notorious for fraud and failure. Sometimes people died suddenly or got old and senile without removing their 'deposit'. Treasure hunters now take their metal detectors to these old farms and look for forgotten stashes of money, gold, etc. The corners of fencelines were popular places to bury because they could be found, even in the dark, so that's the place to start looking.
