I was thrilled to find out that $10 fee that Chase was charging, got them into a lot of trouble and they have to pay it back and not charge it anymore. I doesn't help me since I closed it. My only two cards now is with my Credit Union 10.9% and AMEX (I only have Amex because of making purchases at Costco). I've closed everything else. It's nice to know the little guy can win every once in awhile.

My interest rate on my CitiMastercard rose from 7.24 to 24.99 last month. I called them and they said that they sent me a notice in Jan. and Feb. saying that I had the option to close my account and stay at the same interest rate, or have my interest rate increased and keep the account open. Well, I must have missed that letter, so I asked them to send me a copy of that letter. The offer ended in March, so now I am stuck with a 24.99 interest rate on a 10,000 balance. 200.00 a month in finance charges alone. I told them they must be stupid doing this to people, because the economy is already in the toilet and if you force people to close their accounts it will hurt their credit score and disable them to borrow more money to put back into the economy. Then the people who can pay these interest rate hikes will either default on their accounts, or file for bankruptcy. I was so pissed off. I told them that I will pay this 10,000 off within the next year, even if I have to get a personal lo...(Read more of this comment)an at 8% to do it. Then I will keep the card, but I will only make $99 purchases that can be paid off at 0% for 3 months or $299 purchases that can be paid off at 0% for 6 months. I'll do it just to keep the card active, but they will never receive another dime from me on interest after this is all over with. I use to use this credit card for vacations once or twice a year, because the interest rate was cheap. But, that won't happen any longer. They can kiss my ass for any future large purchases.(Show less of this comment)
I have Chase, BOA, and Citibank cards. It appears that they are all doing it.
I have some cards though that they haven't changed and I'm wondering exactly why. They appear to be the ones associated with another company such as Amazon, US Airways, and Fund groups. But I have been having the same ludicrous experiences with the regular bank cards.
It's actually irritated me enough to start moving my savings and transaction accounts to other banks.
Something should be done about this, especially with banks that are receiving government money.
My experience with BOA are the same as previous posters reported with other CC's. They didn't care and had a real attitude.
The more I read these columns, the more I realiaze it isn't just me that has a problem with AMEX. I had the same experience with them dropping my limit. To add insult to injury, they stated the reason was my future ability to pay. Horse sh@t! I just paid off all but 200.00 on my account and my credit limit got cut in half! I only took their damn card because you need two credit cards in Europe to rent a car! I'll be dammed if I am going to walk all over while I am on vacation so I got the Amex for the flight mileage and as a back up card. I wouldn't mind but I make well into the six digits income wise and own a real estate leasing company with tons of assets despite this messed up economy. You would think I would be the type of customer they would keep but I was wrong. I will hold this joke of a card until I can find a suitable replacement then they can get bent. If everyone with a six figure income would snub them, how much will they make then? Maybe we should have a dump amex day and...(Read more of this comment) a few 100K people cancel their accounts at once, they would have to re-think their position.(Show less of this comment)

CitiBank just reduced my Available credit from $15,000 to ---> $100!!!!
Unbelievable!! no advanced notice, no reason -- no nothing!!
The card is a "Dividends Reward" card -- approx 2 yrs old, always pay 100% every month. The rewards were fairly good -- 2% cash back on gas and 1% back on everything else, up to a max limit of $300/yr -- but I stopped using it as AMEX gave 3% back on gas AND wireless AND office supplies, and 1% on everything else, with NO ANNUAL MAX LIMIT on the cashbacks.
I immediately called them about it last night, and said they I could "apply to increase my credit limit", which did nothing.
The effect on me is a major ding to my credit score (less available credit). I am really pissed at them. They just totally alienated me. 1) what good is a gredit card with a $100 line of credit? 2) why would I give Citi any business??
In a recent news story it said that Citi was reducing interest rates for their mortgage customers who are 3 months behi...(Read more of this comment)nd on their payments. So -- the message is -- if your good about managing your credit, you get screwed; if your bad about managing your credit -- you get bailed. I guess I just wasn't profitable enough for them. Screw CitiBANK!! Probably going to start a website - www.screwCitiBank.com ---look for it!!(Show less of this comment)
The same exact thing happened to us with Amex, not once but twice - we have a platinum cad that they pushed is into 9 years ago, the membership is high like 700.00 for two - we have never been later our credit excellent and there was not a limit on the card - we owed them around the same as you and they reduced our limit down to what we owed 11 months ago, we stopped using it and paid the balance down $8000.00 and it was not good enough for them - 3 months ago they reduced it again to what the new balance was and when I called to give them a piece of my mind I also was met with attitude. I told this guy that when I was done paying it off that I would never, ever, ever use an Amex card again - he didn't really care and you know...neither should the rest of us - one day not too far off they will be sorry!
We will all get our satisfaction for their unprofessional and self serving behavior!
Just last week AmEx notified me that they had lowered my credit limit to only $200 more than I owed. This was the third time they had lowered my limit. I have always paid more than the minimum, on time and was never, ever using more than half of the original limit they gave me; which was $15,000.00. In fact, I only owe them $4,500.00 and each month now I expect my credit limit to be lowered by whatever payment I make. I was devastated and cried for days because I didn't understand what I'd done wrong! I called them and they made me feel like a deadbeat!
I agree with other posts that AmEx used to be the 'best' of the industry. Now, they're slugs. I hope someone stops these credit card companies before they ruin the entire credit base of our country. I also have a Chase, Citibank and Bank of America card, I wonder when I'll hear from them because I don't use my cards but once a year and then for only a $100. or so charge for Christmas.
I agree 100% with every single poster - I just today wrote a story on my web log at wwwmainstreetcritic.blogspot.com that had to do with credit and obtaining a job. This subject was for tomorrow but after reading all these comments I just had to put in my 2 cents. I have experienced everything all of you have - cut my limits down to what my balances are, raised interest rates from 7.99 to 24.00% (and when you call to have them decreased either they won't or they will only go down a few points - like 17 or 18%)and like all of you, we have high credit ficos and have never ever been late and pay more than the minimum. As a former Mortgage Loan Office and Credit Assistance expert I will tell you that we have been scammed and robbed not only by the credit card companies but by our very own government who gave them legal loan sharking & theivery Power through lobbyied legislation back in the early 2000's. This to me was a set up by the politicians and credit card company's to literally s...(Read more of this comment)quash the middle class and it seems they have come really close. Credit has been choked off everywhere, no one can sell or refinance their homes, businesses not only lost credit lines but their business credit cards have been canceled with out their knowledge and the credit card companies are literally boxing us in while destroying our good credit histories. Job listings are posting info stating they will be doing credit checks, bad credit, bankruptcy...don't bother applying. What does credit have to do with getting a job?? NOTHING, it is another discrimmination practice to weed job hungry people out - this is sooooooo illegal and no one is doing a thing about it! I am urging people to file complaints with the FTC, call, write, email, the white house, state representatives, maybe if we collectively band together and let the politicians know that we are taking a stand and if they want to keep their jobs they better pass legislation with strict credit card regulations to reel these loan sharks in - government and these CC companys have literally added to the destruction of our economy. We should never have bailed these people out - they are using our tax money to sc*w all of us.(Show less of this comment)
I would like to leave one more comment for those who believe that the credit card companies don't make any money off you when you pay off your balance. Remember that just using the card incurs charges for the merchant, as little as 3% of the purchase price but usually much higher than that. The more you use your card, the more fees they collect. We, the consumers, pay for these fees through adjusted retail prices. This is a win-win for the card companies. Unfortunately, we are at the mercy of these goons, since they can and will limit who can use their service and under what terms. We can all thank our inept government for that. Capitalism at it's best, folks. Only those who spend according to the new "guidelines" will be part of the next consumer generation.
This has to be the smartest things credit card companies have come out with to date. Offer low rates, huge credit limits and more cards than any reasonable person can carry, wait for them to be filled up then start changing the rates and terms. Can't hack it.. no problem, cancel card, reduce credit score, then offer new money under stimulus package at higher rates to same lender. It's brilliant. I guess we just didn't read the really fine print when we all signed up to these cards. The fun part is about to start when the card companies start realizing that those very same clients they cut off are the same ones that should be fuelling an eventual economic recovery. Except that with reduced credit scores they won't be able to get at that as fast as they want us to. This is one of the most blatant and brazen moves to limit risk exposure on the backs of their once best clients I have ever seen in my long career. To hell with all your credit scores, what about mine (spoken from the ...(Read more of this comment)credit card company's perspective - tounge in cheek)(Show less of this comment)

Agreed, I had a similar situation to the lady mentioned in the story with Chase. It is so insane that the banks would be willing to lend to so many people with poor credit and now are punishing those with excellent credit histories and 'sensible' spenders. It's a capitalistic society. Those who are going bankrupt deserve to go bankrupt along with the banks that support such irrational spending. Loose credit is what got us into this mess and now we can't get credit when needed. It makes a person wonder about these people with Harvard, Wharton, Kellogg, Stanford, Sloan, etc. MBAs. Are they really that smart or just greedy? It doesn't take a Finance/Economics PhD to see that it is greed that is killing the economy. Understood that is not a solution, but don't hurt those that could help the economy. Let those who are failing fail so that the strong survive. Isn't this Darwin's theory? Ugh..it makes me sick to my stomach.
These are the same jerks who came to us with their hands out for TARP money. Screw them.... Let them go under. They are so far out of touch with reality it is sickening. Their greed is killing this country. If they hit me with this and cause me credit issues, I'll just drop my payments to $10 a month and pick one card at a time and pay them all off and drop them. If my credit is going to be slammed by their manitpulations then let them suffer. It is sad that consumers can enter into a contract with these credit card companies, and they have all the power in the world to change the rules. What a scam!!!!!

All we are to the credit card companies is a stinking FICO score. And you can see in this article that even being responsible does not protect you from having your FICO score lowered for no good reason. You have a balance, pay your bills on time and your FICO score drops simply because some credit card issuer lowers your limit or closes your account. Then, since your FICO score dropped, your interest rate jumps on all of your cards that have a balance. What a bunch on VULTURES! Congress should halt this practice and put heavy fines on lenders that do this. Once the shoe is on the other foot, these lenders will see what is feels like to get screwed.
slinn40291, are you kidding when you post: "Once again, where is the regulatory oversight to protect consumers that have good credit and pay their bills on time?"
Regulatory oversight from this administration means punishing people w/good credit and paying bills on time and attempting to transfer their net worth to those who could never live up to that descrIption. Asking for more oversight now is like inviting the foxes to guard the henhouse. The primary root of today's financial crisis was not lack of oversight, it was meddling in the financial world by gov't thick-head-ocrats who punished banks for not making risky loans to people who couldn't pay them back, in pursuit of the principal "losers deserve to be homeowners too."
The Bush admin should have pursued harder the piercing of the veil of secrecy Frank & Dodd erected over Freddy & Fanny, but since that didn't happen, we have lost at least 4 years where oversight will bring about more evil than...(Read more of this comment) good.
I had a Chase account that was 3.99% that I was paying on but when I got the notice about the $10 service fee I called to find out why this was happening. At first I was told it was based on information received from a credit reporting agency. This floored me since I have excellent credit. After pulling my credit report and seeing nothing amiss, I noticed that I had the right to request information regarding what credit agency and the information was. After being told different stories from different people at Chase I found out it was not from any adverse info on my credit report but because I had this low rate for several years and it was costing them too much money. I then asked why I am not being given the option to refuse this new fee, and was told they could do whatever they want. Needless to say I filed a complaint with the FTC, paid off the balance and closed my account before they started charging this fee.

I recently had a credit card issuer jack my interest rate from 12.99% to 25.08% because i have a somewhat high ratio, an average credit score and length of history. I pay my bills on time and always pay more than the minimum. Well i finally got a call into a gentleman with the authority to to change it back. I told him i would pay a certain amount of money for a certain amount of time and if he would lower my rate back to where it was if i followed through on my word. He did lower it back and told me as long as a continued to pay down my debt without using my card that it would stay there. This is a small regional bank which i believe is the way to go. Most of the small regional banks had nothing to do with sub-prime mortgages or securitized debt so some of you should look into these "community banks". Remember the credit card companies want to make money so you have to negotiate with them and stay calm. Don't get angry at who you are talking to cause this will not get you where you wa...(Read more of this comment)nt to be. Integrity still is important and if you do what you say and say what you mean you are more likely to get what you want. The big banks are doing this stuff because they are trying to head off what is coming. I am an optimist but this downturn is long from being over. Just do the right thing on your end and hopefully when the economy picks up you will be where you want to be. (Show less of this comment)
American Express screwed me over as well. I have been a cardholder for 11 years and have never been late on a payment. I received a notice that they were significantly reducing my credit limit to only $400 over my current balance because of high credit balances (which are actually significantly less than they were 5 years ago). I am glad that I had not spent that $400 prior to getting the notice so they could have also hit me up with over balance fees. I plan to close my account with American Express and never do business with them again. At one time, they were the customer service leader in the industry - now they just want to screw their faithful, on-time paying customers.
Once again, where is the regulatory oversight to protect consumers that have good credit and pay their bills on time?

I had a few credit cards most of them with small balances & limits. Salute Visa was one of them. One week I recieved a letter stating they had upped my credit limit & the next week recieved notice they cancelled my card. When I called they really seem to care less. I told them that since I did not ask for card to be cancelled & they did this mess on their own I was not paying finance cjarges, monthly or yearly fees & if they try to force me I will just consilidate all my bills and file with a debt solution company or file bankrupsy/ Will ahve to wait to see what happens. They bite.n

I have been paying my bills in full every month (average of 5K/month) to American Express. When they found out that I had a credit card that was late by 120 days (in reality I had a 13 cents credit that the other companies software inadvertinetly reported as being late) they dropped all of my credit cards limits to almost nothing. When I called to explain the situation I was told that they did not care if there was a problem, they did not want me as a customer.
I use to like AmEx, now I do not plan on ever using them again!!!!
I have been a credit gold card member since 1973 with no late payments on any account on my credit reports. I recently bought a buisness and established a line of credit from the same company via a Business card. I used the Buisness Card to buy inventory and have been paying my credit card bills religiously on time. Of course. I have a higher debt to income ratio based on the new buisness, but my credit score is still above 750 and my wifes is above that. The credit card company left me a voice mail and then sent me an email telling me they lowered my buisness credit line due to the fact that I have too much debt. No one asked me if my income went up, they based the debt to income ratio on my previous years income when I applied for the business card. When I called them to explain this, they told me their decision was final the the line of credit is reduced. I guess they really don't want paying customers. Paying for the banks mistakes and those people that don't pay their bil...(Read more of this comment)ls on time is getting real old. If I didn't have the business, I would bail on all my credit cards except my debt card via my credit union. After 26 years of using the gold card and running up the bill to $30,000 and paying it off within the year, I think I will bail on that card after I pay off the balance. (Show less of this comment)

I rotate my credit cards (change every 3-4 months) to keep them active. But there's another insidious practice happening - dramatic increase in interest rate, despite high FICO, perfect payment record. One bank (not named to preserve my privacy) just hiked my interest rate from 7.9% to 17.9% "because of how long you've had the card, and how long the previous interest rate was in effect." Calls that went up the management chain got nothing but "that's what it is, live with it or close the account." I pay my bills off completely every month, so the credit card issuers make no money off me, which is why I suspect they made the change, wanting to push me to close the account. Of course closing the account would have the drastic downward effect on my FICO that the article describes. The new Catch 22 is that if I don't "charge enough" they may close it on me anyway.
