I can strongly say that there are very few accounting jobs out there. I graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting and Finance, and they are considered two degrees. Also, I have Master's of Tax. Furthermore, I was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma as a junior. All of the entry level accounting positions are going to either (1) students who had an internship with the firm, or (2) were laid off and have 1 to 3 years of experience. I have decided to finish 4 more math classes, and teach math in high school. For the state of New Jersey you just have to have 30 credit hours (12 credits at 300 level or above) in subject who want to teach, but you must have a 4 year college degree in something.

Why is this article still floating around? First it is inaccurate, second, it is old and we have seen the same stuff over and over. Where are the REAL jobs being found. It obviously isn't the accounting field, enterprise or reynolds and reynolds.

So if you don't have an IT , engineering or Accounting degree, your choices are UPS and Enterprise Rent a Car. So much for paying 50K + for a liberal arts degree. Of course there always Uncle Sam aka the military .

Someone must of paid to be included in this for companies that are hiring. Went that route, act like they are interested, as previously pointed out...unless you are willing to push add-ons they dont want you! Seems like they dont care about the degree or how hard you worked to earn it, just if you can push insurance. I thought they were in the rental business, not insurance? They also advertise one rate of pay to attract you, then when you get your phone interview, its 10.50 hr plus what you push. Sounds like false advertisement to me. My 2nd one claims everyone does it, if everyone is a criminal, does that mean its okay to be the same? Will never be a customer for this company again...

Not only are you washing cars, and nagging customers, you arent gettting the pay you went to college for.....Better off not going to college and being a car salesman....

WOW!! I actually read the article after i read some of very interesting comments. I must say, some of the stuff people have said, i agree with. But other stuff has just been an eye opener. Working at Enterprise is a joke, i mean i have over 3 years of retail experience (not enterprise), and 6 months of accounting clerk experience. And i am having trouble finding a new job. its true, for a company to hire you, a GPA 4.0 doesnt say much unless you have some kind of field related experience. Start at a medium sized firm and work your way up, even better, open up your own accounting office with a large clientele. There is alot of competition out there, if you want to make it, you have to stand out with confidence.

I do not agree with the content of this article Enterprise will not hire you with a college degree unless you have a strong sales background to push all of "add-ons" to the rental car contract. I know this because I am unemployed, have a BBA and they refused to interview me because of the lack of sales background. Plus, you have to fill out this exhaustive portfolio of information that THEN they tell you at the end if you are qualified or not. I had to fight with them for three months to get my personal information account deleted.

In regards to the accountants, get a job at a medium size local accounting firm. Skip the big guns, they are notorious for their poor treatment of employees. Once you have built up your skills at a medium size local firm, you will have a group of clients that routinely ask for you. At this point, you can strike out on your own, ask to be made or possibly be made a partner, etc.

Having worked six years in public accounting (I'm not an...(Read more of this comment)

You can't be serious about someone coming out of
college and going to work for Enterprise Rent A Car. Come on get real! I am 55 years old I did that when I got out of High School ( worked at a car
rental) it doesn't take much of a brain to stand
behind a rental counter and rent a car to a jerk
that just got off a airplane who thinks that he's better that you because he's flying on company business. My son will graduate next year, I have a nephew who graduates this year. I am NOT nor my
sister spending thousands of dollars, working our selves to death to see my son or nephew do something as
simple as renting cars and making minumin wage.

Reynolds and Reynolds? Really? Makes sense they have openings. A few minutes of googleing and you will find it's one of the most notoriously awful companies to work for in the entire country.

Its true that there are less jobs in the market right now. But there is jobs.Just because you have an accounting degree doesn't mean you can only accept accounting positions. When the economy is this bad you need to be open minded. Someone may have to start from the bottom and work there way up. Alot of recent graduates need to realize that there dream job may not materialize right away due to the economic challenges we are facing.

This article is totally wrong about the Big-4 accounting firms. Did they pay the author to put their names out for advertisement? There have been massive laid off from all Big-4 accounting firms and they are NOT hiring any entry level staff currently. I graduated with my 4-year accounting degree with an excellent GPA of 4.00, and I passed 3 parts of my CPA exam. In addition, I have been working for Deloitte after I graduated with my Master of Taxation degree with a GPA of 3.87 last May. At the beginning of this year, they started to lay off people like crazy because of the greedy partners decided to do so. I mean, people work very hard in Deloitte. During tax season, people work almost 7 days per week from 8am to 11pm at night. My suggestion: work for the government - you can have a quality life; work for the Big-4 - you are nobody and they think that you don't deserve a life if you are not a partner.

This article is not entirely accurate. I applied for all of the big accounting firms and received no reply. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with an accounting degree, also I have an MBA in accounting with a 3.78 GPA (out of 4.0) - I have my CPA and am a recent graduate and have heard ZERO replies. I live in Mass and have applied in Boston, Providence RI, and Conn. - show me the jobs if you claim they are out there!
