Oh, my, great "software equivalents" article! My work pays for Rosetta Stone, but only if I access it FROM work, and who has time for THAT?? LiveMocha FTW. I can do it on my own time, at my own pace, learn all the same languages, and do it for as long as I want, ha. I'm trying to cope with divorce right now and I'm trying to fill my time with social activities that are better than chat rooms and (ew) Facebook. This is perfect, thank you!

On the software: 1) Mucho Love to the OpenOffice. Heart..so...much. 2) For nerds (with Firefox): Zotero instead of EndNote. 3) GIMP is good, but for basic needs, Seashore is better if you're on a Mac. Look! No X11!

@Trai_Dep: Free, until you need or want to get the latest version. Then, it's $80. Their list of substitutes for iLife is more than just the graphics application (Picasa thru Wordpress). Of course, they're not integrated all purty-like.

It's worth noting that a) iLife is free* and b) the above free "substitute" is a graphics application, when iLife is a full suite of applications, cunningly integrated into a yummy, satisfying whole. * Err, with purchase of a Mac.

@B: Although, I have to admit, it's a rewards program expertly aimed at cat lovers.

Silly kitty. You use a credit card for cocaine, not cat food.
