My clunker is a 1992 Silverado given to me as a gift from my dad in 2004 for going back to school when I was older and graduating with honors. He had been using it as a retirement vehicle to haul a trailer. My car totally qualifies.
KBB says it's worth $2,400 trade-in value. Due to the economic situation I could be let go from my job at anytime. The Silverado is my 3rd car. Maybe, I could afford $100.00 more to pay for a car per month. Do I:
A. Trade-in the car or sell it and buy an older used car that is nicer and more economical than it?
B. Suffer without A/C, A/T in Los Angeles and get the Yaris lease when Toyota announces it?
C. Keep the Silverado as a 3rd car and sell it after all the cars like it are destroyed by the government. Then sell it, and put the money in the bank?

Cash for Clunkers... another example of the US Government rewarding people who made poor decisions. This is just plain wrong. Give everyone the benefit, or no one. Or better yet. give the cash to people who made good decisions several years ago (those who bought vehicles getting over 25mpg). They can then buy new cars and their used ones can be available for those fools who are now trying to get rid of their gas hogs.
Okay obviously some people have had a little trouble reading this article. It says 1984 or later as in the automobile can't be older than 1984. Yes it has to be running, I can't just go to a junkyard and tow something out for a few hundred bucks and trade it in for $4500 on a new car. It also defeats the purpose if it is not running, because it is not polluting! Registered and insured for a year..... It should already be both if you are driving it on the road. If it is not insured and registered then we can assume it stays parked in your driveway and again not polluting. If you want to cry about the unjustness of this bill then pick a valid argument.
How about where is all this money coming from? Taxpayers... You bail me out because I made an unwise choice to buy a gas guzzler that ruins my wallet and the environment at the same time. Thank you American taxpayers for bailing me out. I was really regretting buying my 15mpg V8 auto and having to pay $3 a gallon to fill ...(Read more of this comment)her up every other day.
If your going to cry about something, cry out about something that actually matters. (Show less of this comment)

First, find a dealer. Gov't forcing GM & Chrysler to close dealers. I live in Illinois. Prob have to drive to Texas to find a dealer.
Second, the consumer never sees the voucher or the $$. This will be wide open for the dealers. Each new car they sell will have been a "voucher" deal. Even if you do a normal deal and trade in just a car, not a "klunker" the dealer will voucher an old beater, phony up the paperwork and viola, he's $4500 richer & the consumer is none the wiser.
Just who from the gov't is going to actually see these "klunkers" and how will they documnet them.
There'll be a run on "klunkers", stealing them right out of your driveway, backyard and cow pasture. "Honest Mr Gov't inspector sir, it was a runnin' when it was brought in here."
About a year after this program begins, they'll be hauling "checkered sportcoat Willy" out in cuffs. 'Course he'll claim the "stress made me do it" and be out by supper time.
What the hell is going on so many stupid conditions attached must be 84 or older. drivable. insured for a year. who gives a crap about all of that if a car is toxic to the environment than get rid of it and upgrade. I am getting so sick of politicians and bailouts and taxpayers getting screwed over. for God's sake stop it already before a revolution breaks out. do the other countries go to extreme conditions on what qualifies NO NO NO. I live in LA, CA and the air quality is so horrible that a car made in the 90s getting even 20mpg does a whole lot more polluting than it would in other states cause you just sit there in traffic all the time. get your act togather government. im sick of all of you
60% the cars that are currently donated to charity will now be eligible for a $3500 or $4500 voucher under the cash for clunkers program. Since the tax deduction for donating a car is only $500 or what the car sells charities won't be able to compete with the program and charitible car donation will end. A better idea is to just change the amount a person can deduct for donating their car back to the book value. That way every car is eligible, the government doesn't have to spend $4 million of our dollars giving away vouchers and trying to administer a progam that is way too convoluted!

What a joke. Taxpayers that still own a 1984 car probably can't afford to buy a new car, even with the rebate.
