Data, Market Shifts Leave ETFs Mixed

A mix of data and market shifts made for up and down trading Tuesday that left many exchange traded funds teetering through the day. A late-session rally on rising energy prices put the Dow Jones Industrial Index in positive territory and oil prices close to $59 a barrel. Winners

Rising energy prices boosted shares of the United States Natural Gas fund (UNG) by 4.8%. Gold closed above $923, pushing shares of the Market Vectors Gold Miners fund (GDX) up 4.4%.

Losers

Financial stocks remained volatile Tuesday, knocking both the SPDR KBW Bank fund (KBE) and SPDR KBW Regional Banking fund (KRE) back 3.8%. The iShares S&P North American Technology Semiconductors fund (IGW) experienced a 2.5% drop after Applied Materials (AMAT) swung to a loss.

Launching Pad
Claymore Securities is seeking permission from the Securities and Exchange Commission for a trio of actively managed exchange-traded funds that would be managed with a bottom-up approach by subadvisor Delta Global Advisors. Technical analysis could figure in stock selection for the proposed Claymore Delta Global Infrastructure ETF, Claymore Delta Global Hard Assets ETF and Claymore Delta Global Agribusiness ETF, the firm said.
