Major indexes fell Friday as investors digested fresh data on consumer price index, which helps gauge inflation and industrial production.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 77 points to close at 9321. The Nasdaq dipped 24 points to close at 1986, and the S&P 500 shed nine to end at 1004. Exchange-traded funds dipped along with broader indexes.
The Labor Department said that its consumer-price index was unchanged on a monthly basis in July from June. However, prices on an annual basis fell at the fastest rate since 1950, plunging 2.1% from a year ago.

Winners
The iShares MSCI Japan Index fund rose 2.2% for the week as the Nikkei Index hit a 10-month high. The iShares MSCI Taiwan Index fund rose on improved prospects for the chip industry.
Losers
The SPDR KBW Regional Banking fund lost 5.5% for the week as financial stocks led the declines. The United States Natural Gas fund also lost 5.4% for the week as gas prices receded.

Barclays Global Investors said global exchange-traded fund assets rose 11% in the first six months of the year topping $789 billion. However, trading volume dropped 17% from the year-ago period, according to the firm's July 2009 ETF Landscape report. The report said European ETFs now outnumber U.S. funds with 713 products sold in Europe and 693 in the U.S. However, the U.S. ETF market remains substantially larger totaling $538 billion as opposed to Europe s $166 billion at the end of the first half.
Launching Pad
Van Eck Global on Friday launched the Market Vectors Vietnam ETF, the first U.S.-based ETF offering exposure to the Vietnamese market. The fund seeks to replicate as closely as possible the price and yield performance of the Market Vectors Vietnam Index. The index gets approximately 70% of its market capitalization from securities of companies domiciled and primarily listed on an exchange in Vietnam and which generate at least 50% of revenues from Vietnam; this percentage is expected to increase in the future. The remaining 30% is comprised of offshore companies which generate, or are expected to generate, at least 50% of their revenues from Vietnam. The fund charnges an expense ratio of 0.99%.
Vanguard filed requests with the Securities and Exchange Commission to launch seven exchange-traded funds based on Barclays Capital government and corporate bond indexes. Three funds will track short-, medium- and long-term government bonds, according to the filing. Three funds will track short-, medium- and long-term corporate bonds and the seventh will track a Barclays index of mortgage-backed securities. The funds will charge annual expense ratios of 0.15%.
