ETFs Endure Rocky Session

Market Wrap-Up

An uneven day in the markets left ETFs mixed Tuesday, reflecting the skepticism over government rescue plans, grim home and car sales data and feeble efforts for a rally. The day after a 299-point drop, the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down 37 points at 6726, a new 12-year low. The S&P 500 lost four points to close below the key 700 level at 696. Oil bounced slightly after a 10% drop, closing up 3.3% at $41.49 a barrel.

Winners

Basic materials had a relatively strong session, with non-ferrous metals rising 5.7% and industrial metals climbing 4.3%. That translated into a 3.5% rise for the SPDR S&P Metals & Mining fund (XME). Oil gained 3.3% Tuesday, recovering some of the ground it lost Monday. The mild pop gave a small boost to the SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production fund (XOP), which closed up 2.7%.

Losers

Continuing fallout from American International Group s (AIG) troubles undermined investor confidence in the shaky financial sector and dealt the SPDR KBW Insurance fund (KIE) a 4.7% loss, underpinned by a 16.6% loss at major holding MetLife (MET). The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Financial Sector Index fund (IYG) dropped 1.6%.
