ETFs Head Lower in Broad-Based Selloff

A second day of market losses was headlined by the government's ouster of General Motors (GM) CEO Rick Wagoner. But the broad-based slide affected exchange-traded funds in all sectors. Financials, auto makers and mobile communications were among the big losers as the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 254 points to close at 7522. With the first quarter set to end Tuesday, the major indexes are on track to record declines in six consecutive quarters for the first time since 1969-70. Winners

For unleveraged funds, not losing ground was the best outcome during Monday s selloff. Treasurys assumed their traditional safe harbor role as the iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond fund (TLT) gained 0.4%. The Financial Bear 3X Shares fund (FAZ) offered by Direxion was one of the most heavily traded tickers on Monday, and soared 24.1%.

Losers

The SPDR KBW Bank ETF (KBE) lost 9.8% amid concerns that banks remain unstable. Regional Bank HOLDRS (RKH) and the SPDR Select Financial SPDR fund (XLF) shed 9.5% and 8.6%, respectively.
