ETFs See Steady Gains as Market Rallies

Stocks and exchange-traded funds picked up momentum Monday as third-quarter earnings started to roll in at a faster pace.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 96 points at 10092. The Nasdaq ended up 20 points at 2176, and the S&P 500 climbed 10 to 1098.

Mostly well-received earnings from the likes of Caterpillar (CAT) prompted a midday surge. Another 134 S&P 500 components are reporting this week. According to Thomson Reuters, the blended earnings growth rate, which combines companies that have reported with analysts' estimates for those that haven't, has improved to -22.6% for the third quarter, up from -24.6% the prior week for S&P 500 components.

Among stocks to watch, Eaton (ETN) and Hasbro (HAS) both surpassed earnings estimates.

In Asia, property plays helped markets rise. European markets also climbed.

Oil futures ebbed 29 cents on the Nymex, where front-month crude was at $79.32 a barrel as of 4:02 p.m., while gold futures were up $11.80 an ounce at $1063.30 an ounce.

Winners

Surging energy prices gave shares of the Market Vectors Russia fund (RSX) a 3.4% boost. Accelerating commodity prices also pushed up shares of the Market Vectors Agribusiness fund (MOO) by 3.2%.

Losers

The sharp midday acceleration pushed back iPath Exchange Traded Notes S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures fund (VXX) shares by 2.6%. The broad index gains worked against the Short S&P 500 ProShares fund (SH), which lost 0.8%.

Launching Pad
Claymore Securities launched the Claymore/AlphaShares China All-Cap ETF (YAO), which invests in a basket of 99 small-, mid- and large-cap Chinese companies. It now has three China-related funds. AlphaShares has two other ETF offerings with Claymore: the Claymore/AlphaShares China Real Estate ETF (TAO), and the Claymore/AlphaShares China Small Cap Index ETF (HAO). The fund will charge an expense ratio of 0.7%.
