ETFs Tumble as Dow Sheds More Than 2%

Sliding global economic sentiment, receding oil prices and the nearing end of the second-quarter earnings season combined to create a solid selloff in stocks Monday. A World Bank report over the weekend suggested that global GDP would shrink by 2.9% for the full year, worse than the 1.7% contraction of earlier forecasts. That triggered selling in major global markets, and helped push oil prices down well below the $70 level crude reached through most of last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Index shed 201 points to close at 8339. The S&P 500 stock index dropped below 900 for the first time since May 28. Winners

Among unleveraged, unshorted exchange-traded funds, the iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond fund (TLT) proved the safest bet, gaining 1%. Holding their ground, at least, were shares of the iShares Barclays TIPS Bond Fund (TIP), which notched a 0.2% gain.

Losers

Gold dropped to $923 an ounce, pushing shares of the Market Vectors Gold Miners (GDX) down by 6.7%. Crude's slide to $66.93 a barrel knocked back the Oil Service HOLDRS Trust (OIH) by 6.6%.
