Housing ETFs Experience Rare Rally

Major stocks surged Monday after strong earnings results from retailers Lowe's (LOW) and Dillard's (DDS) and improved data on housing. The National Association of Home Builders reported its key sentiment index rose to the highest level since the Lehman Brothers collapse in September 2008. Most unleveraged exchange-traded funds rose in vigorous trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 235 points to close at 8504. Winners

The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Home Construction fund (ITB) increased 6.8% on Lowe s earnings and the home builder survey. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Real Estate fund rose 8.1%.

Elections in India buoyed that county's equity markets and sent the iPath MSCI India exchange traded notes (INP) up 23.7%.

Losers

Investors backed out of safe havens to catch the rally in stocks, sending gold down to $922 an ounce. That pushed back the SPDR Gold Shares fund (GLD) 1.2%. Treasurys also slipped slightly, with the iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond fund (TLT) dropping 1.6%.
