Mixed Session Leaves Financials Higher

Financial stocks bucked a lagging trend in a jittery market, as investors looked to a string of quarterly earnings reports that promise to be bad, but perhaps not uniformly dismal. Goldman Sachs (GS) reports Tuesday, and exchange traded funds such as the SPDR Financial Select fund (XLF) were up ahead of the announcements. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 25 points at 8057. Winners

Financials once again surged, with the SPDR KBW Bank fund (KBE) closing up 7.2%, and the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Financial Services ETF (IYG) gaining 5.2%. The SPDR S&P Metals & Mining fund (XME) rose 3.2% on anticipation of global stimulus measures increasing commodity demand.

Losers

Crude dropped to $50 a barrel Monday, knocking shares of the iPath S&P GSCI Crude Oil Total Return fund (OIL) down 3.4%. The United States Oil fund (USO) slid 3.3%.

Monday s Industry Headlines

Barclays Global Investors, the manager of the iShares family of exchange-traded funds, said Lee Kranefuss will become chairman and that Mike Latham, who is based in San Francisco, and Rory Tobin in London will become co-CEOs once the $4.4 billion buyout deal with CVC Capital Partners is finalized.
