SmartMoney Writer Honored

SmartMoney magazine Senior Writer Anne Kadet has won a coveted 2009 Deadline Club award for opinion writing, beating out distinguished co-nominees Fareed Zakaria of Newsweek and Michael Wolff of Vanity Fair. Kadet was honored -- along with winners from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, among others -- at the Club's annual award dinner held at New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel. (Full list of winners here.)

Kadet took home the Deadline Club's distinctive "Rube" award (so named for its designer, legendary cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg) for her monthly column "Tough Customer," which takes a uniquely humorous perspective on consumer issues -- from the absurd proliferation of in-store cafes to people who bury their money in the backyard. Her work has also been honored this year by two other prominent competitions, the National Headliner Awards and the Front Page Awards.

SmartMoney Staff Writer Angie Marek was also recognized this year by the Deadline Club, as one of three finalists in the category of science, technology, medical or environmental reporting. The nod came for her story "Peddling Pills," an investigative piece in which Marek traveled on the job with a pharmaceutical drug rep to spotlight the undue influence these salespeople still have in convincing doctors to prescribe their medications.

The Deadline Club, the New York chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, has been recognizing outstanding journalism for nearly 80 years.
