Despite Fading Rally, Some ETFs Post Gains

A few surprises greeted traders Monday morning. The soap opera between Microsoft (MSFT) and Yahoo (YHOO) took another turn when the software giant and the search engine firm said they were both going to start talking once again — and maybe even reach some kind of a deal. This comes on the heels of Carl Icahn announcing he had bought over 50 million shares of the company. Amazon.com (AMZN) saw its fortunes rise unexpectedly after a bullish call on the stock from an analyst at Goldman Sachs (GS). The Conference Board's leading indicator index slightly increased in April, sparking thoughts that the economy may well be on its way to recovery. Meanwhile, crude touched $127 per barrel before pulling back under that mark. Trader's embraced all that news, especially the report from the Conference Board, and pushed stocks higher Monday more than 100 points. But that rally fizzled in later afternoon trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 41 points to 13,028.
Energy ETFs of all kinds ran higher Monday. The ProShares Ultra Oil & Gas (DIG) gained 1.2%. Market Vectors Nuclear Energy (NLR), an ETF that tracks 38 companies like utility Exelon (EXC) that have exposure to this alternative energy, gained 2.3%.

The Internet HOLDRS (HHH), a fund that owns both Yahoo and Amazon, gained 1%.

After hitting record highs the last few weeks, natural gas has recently started to slide. The United States Natural Gas ETF (UNG) lost 1.6%.

It was also a disappointing day for housing ETFs. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Home Construction fund (ITB) dropped 3%. The SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) decreased 2.3%.
