Some Bank of America Corp. (BAC) customers soon will be able to speak with a live teller when using new ATMs that the nation's second-largest bank by assets is rolling out in select markets.
The Charlotte, N.C.-based company said Thursday that "teller assist" technology will allow customers to interact with a bank teller through video screens on the machines, which can cash checks for exact amounts and dispense cash in smaller denominations than is typical for most ATMs.
Bank of America is installing the new ATMs inside its branches, in drive-up stations and offsite locations. Customers will be able to interact with a teller from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time on Saturdays and Sundays, excluding holidays.
Bank of America said it is initially making the technology available at a branch in Boston this month and will roll the ATMs out to additional branches in "select" U.S. markets this year.
"This technology gives customers easy, convenient access to ATM banking services with the added option of having a personal interaction and the support of a teller available at the push of a button," Katy Knox, retail banking and distribution executive at Bank of America, said in a statement.
The move comes as banks of all sizes are investing in new online and mobile technology that allow customers to conduct basic banking transactions without needing to visit a branch or speak to a teller in person, which are more expensive forms of customer interaction for banks.
Bank of America has been especially active on this front, releasing mobile apps that enable customers to check their balances, receive merchant discounts and deposit checks using smartphones.
Chief Executive Brian Moynihan in January said the use of such technology was growing steadily, noting about 10,000 customers were signing up for its mobile-banking services daily.
In the future, the bank plans to add the capability to split deposits made with the new ATMs into multiple accounts, make loan payments and other features.
