Helmet Hair
The Concept: Shooting lasers into your head might not sound like the best idea, but Apira Science says its iGrow laser-therapy helmet offers a major payoff for balding types: new hair. According to the company, the $695 device uses low-intensity lasers to spur follicle growth, for results in as little as 12 weeks. Apira says the helmet provides complete scalp coverage and is easier to use than laser combs with similar technology. It also has different settings for men and women, and is compatible with iPods, so wearers can rock out while reviving their crowning glory.
Don't Laugh: Some laser products have already been cleared by the FDA, and Apira hopes to submit the iGrow to the agency. The firm allows that the helmet won't restore a full mane for those with significant hair loss, but says its working on studies of the device and can't yet share data. Studies of similar technology show mixed results, ranging from a boost in new hair growth of up to 20 percent to no significant difference compared with a placebo. Robert Bernstein, of the Bernstein Medical Center for Hair Restoration, says that while home laser treatments aren't unusual, "results are modest at best." And unless you're Darth Vader, it's hard to look cool in a helmet.
