The Goods:
Ever sit down at your PC and think: You know what this thing needs? Diamonds! If so, British retailer Fabstuff has your number. For $25,700, the company offers "the world's most expensive computer mouse," a wireless gadget studded with 59 diamonds, which can be arranged in a variety of designs -- including the buyer's initials. The mouse, which is made-to-order by a Swiss firm, also has panels of 18-karat white or yellow gold, making it the "perfect gift for a 50th wedding anniversary," says Fabstuff.
The Reality:
The mouse might class up your desk, but it won't do much for your computing power. Fabstuff notes that the device is wireless, but that's hardly cutting edge; 76 percent of mice sold in the U.S. last year were wireless, according to researcher NPD Group. There are many more advanced models available, says Chris Harrison, a Ph.D. candidate at Carnegie Mellon University who specializes in mobile-interaction technology, adding that he wouldn't pay more than $100 for a mouse. (Fabstuff says it doesn't advertise the device as technologically advanced, and the price reflects the cost of materials.) But when it comes to the gadget's high-end casing, all that glitters isn't gold -- or diamond, for that matter: The mouse's trim is made of plastic.
