HD 3DTV Leaves HDTV in the Dust at CES

HDTV? So pass . The latest craze is HD 3DTV -- and it s everywhere at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

A litany of big-name manufacturers including Samsung (Toshiba), Toshiba (Panasonic), Panasonic (LG ), and LG (Sony) has introduced sets that will be on the market as early as spring. It s unlikely you ll lack for content, either. Several have also introduced 3D compatible Blu-ray players. Sony (SNE) plans to begin releasing 3D movies, starting this summer with Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and also plans to broadcast some of this summer s World Cup games live in 3D. Content providers, among them DirecTV (Discovery), Discovery (IMAX) in partnership with Sony and IMAX (IMAX) ) and ESPN (), are already readying 3D channels.

Expect the push into 3D to be fast and furious over the next few years. Manufacturers don t have substantial room for improvement in the size and picture quality of new sets, so they must rely on features such as Internet connectivity and 3D to entice consumers to buy a new set, says Michael Gartenberg, the vice president of strategy and analysis for Interpret, a market researcher in Los Angeles. They re also hoping to piggyback on buzz over the recent success of the movie Avatar, which theaters presented in 3D.

Before you start saving for a new 3D-ready home theater system, bear in mind that it s still early days for this technology in the consumer market and there are likely to be glitches and snafus with early models. What s more, manufacturers are considering several 3D formats, so buy too early and you could end up with a defunct gadget a la Betamax or the more recent demise of HD DVD. A few, including Panasonic are developing lines of HD 3DTV sets that won t even require 3D glasses.

Still, if you re in the market for a new TV or Blu-ray player, it can t hurt to look. These new 3D-ready products have still more bells and whistles:

Samsung TV: The 2010 lineup available this spring includes 19 flat-panel 3D-ready TVs (for use with glasses); 13 LCD sets and six plasmas. The wireless-ready sets also support Samsung s widget-based Internet@TV feature, which connects with content from online partners including Blockbuster and YouTube. A few are also Energy Star compliant. (Prices not yet released.)

Sony BDP-S770 Blu-ray: Built in Wi-Fi and Ethernet capabilities offer access to the manufacturer s Bravia Internet Video platform. That in turn lets users stream content from Netflix, Amazon (AMZN) Video on Demand, YouTube, Pandora and NPR, among other providers. (Price not yet released.)

LG W2363D computer monitor: 3D isn t just for TVs. Gamers and movie-watchers who want to check out 3D on their home computers can do so (with 3D glasses) using LG s latest monitor. It also features surround-sound capability. (Price not yet released.)
