The Cost of an 11th Hour Thanksgiving Meal

It s Thanksgiving week do you know where your turkey is?

If you re a procrastinating planner, or you ve got unexpected guests coming, you could have a lot of work ahead of you. For those looking for a shortcut, there is still time to order a complete traditional Thanksgiving meal, ready made, right down to the cranberry sauce.

Preparing a big feast may seem daunting for many Americans, as fewer people now cook regularly at home. Americans spend just 51.5% of their total food dollars on eating at home, according to the Department of Agriculture s Economic Research Service and some of those dollars are spent on home deliveries or mail-order food.

Depending on what kind of Thanksgiving experience you re looking for, you may find your options have narrowed by late November. For example, working with a private chef requires some planning ahead. Most of the caterers or private chefs, their commitments are established by now, says Sterling Jasper, the president of All Occasions Concierge, a hospitality service that manages food service professionals. However, many grocery stores and other chains will allow Thanksgiving orders through the end of the day Tuesday or even Wednesday.

If you are trying to pull together a no-fuss feast at the last minute, here are a few options that are still available:

Hire a chef

Many will be booked, but if you re flexible, it s still not impossible to find a small window in a pro s schedule, Jasper says. You ll typically pay about $75 to $275 per hour, plus food costs, and you should pay for a couple of extra hours in case of emergencies or late-arriving guests. Working out the menu in advance to make sure the chef doesn t go too wild could save you 2% or 3% in creativity costs, Jasper says. If you re in the Vegas area, chef Andy Bouchard says he is still taking orders for his $199 gourmet meal for six, made fresh Wednesday night and delivered to your home on Thursday.

Order online

There are plenty of online options for complete meals that can be delivered to your door. At Impromptu Gourmet, you can order a $199 Cajun turkey meal for 10 that comes with two sides, a starter, a bread, and a CD of music for entertaining. Omaha Steaks offers a turkey dinner for six to eight guests that comes with stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and a pumpkin pie, for $109.99, but you will have to do some cooking yourself.

Try the grocery store

Many chains offer prepared meals for pick-up or delivery. Whole Foods options vary by store. A turkey-and-sides dinner for eight costs $144.99 at the Union Square location in Manhattan. Some stores now offer vegetarian or vegan options, and more shoppers appear to be requesting organic turkeys this year, says Libba Letton, a spokeswoman for the chain. Washington, D.C.-area shoppers can order a meal that could serve eight to 10 guests for $39.99 that includes turkey and sides using the Peapod delivery service. You ll need to order by Tuesday evening for a Wednesday delivery. As late as Tuesday, consumers in the New York area can use FreshDirect.com, a local grocery delivery service, to order a full meal that serves eight to 12 people for $199.99.

Look beyond the grocery store

Boston Market offers premade meals for pick-up or delivery starting at $9.99 per person. Thanksgiving orders must be placed by 8 p.m. Wednesday. Like other restaurant chains, Boston Market has seen slower sales during the recession, but holiday orders seem to be holding up, says Ed Keller, the chain s vice president of catering. If you live near a Super Target that sells groceries, you can pick up a meal for $59 that could serve eight to 10 people, but you ll have to order 48 hours in advance. The meal includes turkey, stuffing, green beans and a choice of pie.

Get creative

Seek out third-party help outside the usual channels. For example, MasterCard s concierge service frequently handles holiday requests like securing emergency restaurant reservations and last-minute turducken deliveries, says Sarah Bacon, a concierge. Or try Craigslist for help from enthusiastic amateurs. A Dallas-area ad offered a full meal cooked in your home by a local mom for $75. Consumers can also test the barter economy: One Chicago-area photographer is offering a family portrait in exchange for a seat at someone s Thanksgiving table.
