You wouldn't think there'd be much room for new film-making and film-viewing technologies. After all, movies are already jam-packed with special effects, and 69 3-D flicks are scheduled for release this year alone (up more than 40 percent from 2011). But that's not stopping the latest film-tech ingenues:
3-D PHONE HOME
HTC's Evo 3D cell phone, introduced last year, has a screen capable of showing 3-D movies, no glasses required. Analysts say the "superphone" helped boost sales; HTC shipped 35 million handsets in the first nine months of 2011 -- more than twice as many as in the same period a year earlier.
EFFECTIVE EFFECTS
Think of the most mind-blowing special effect you've seen at the movies. Chances are, Autodesk had something to do with it. Its Maya software created the dreamscapes of Inception, and its MotionBuilder technology transformed actors into Avatar's giant blue beings. Analysts predict Autodesk profits will grow about 85 percent this fiscal year.
SMELLS LIKE A HIT
Engineers say they've added a new dimension to film: smell. South Korean company CJ 4DX uses "smell-o-vision" to match scents to screen action and operates 25 international so-called 4-D movie theaters. The company says it plans to open its first U.S. location this year.
